In this special episode, Frank Murphy visits the Big BBQ Bash in Maryville, Tennessee. Frank spoke with McNabb Center board member Jason Bohne of CNS Y-12; McNabb Center clinical therapist Cade Long; and Big BBQ Bash chairman Dave Bennett of GEAR, LLC. Frank was the emcee for the awards ceremony.

The Helen Ross McNabb Foundation hosted the Big BBQ Bash at Founder’s Square in historic downtown Maryville on June 25 and 26, 2021. The professional barbeque cook-off fundraiser was established as a legacy project by the Leadership Blount Class of 2007 and this marks its seventh year as a Kansas City Barbecue Society (KCBS) sanctioned competition.

Since its inception, the Big BBQ Bash has raised more than $200,000 and all proceeds from the 2021 competition will benefit the McNabb Center’s military services. The event website is http://blountbbqbash.com/.

KCBS sanctions barbecue and grilling contests across the U.S. and advocates barbecue as America’s cuisine. Additionally, KCBS has a vast Certified Barbecue Judging program. KCBS is the largest association of barbecue lovers in the world.

The Big BBQ Bash draws more than 30 teams from across the country to compete for $10,000 in cash and prizes, and of course, bragging rights. Categories include pulled pork, ribs, brisket and chicken. Former governor Bill Haslam proclaimed the Big BBQ Bash as a state championship, making the competition a qualifier for the American Royal Barbecue Cook-Off and Jack Daniel’s World Championship Invitational Barbecue.

The Big BBQ Bash is a part of Summer on Broadway, a two-day festival with food and activities for the whole family. Admission is free to the public and more information about Summer on Broadway can be found at http://summeronbroadway.net.

Frank’s grandson Artie wants to visit the locations where Krisha & Frank have recorded episodes for See More Smokies. Frank wonders if he should bring Artie to a new location they haven’t visited yet and record an episode there.

Krisha sometimes goes to Walgreens for lunch between shows. They have a mini-Kroger in the store. As she left, she picked up a piece of paper in the parking lot. It was a $70 voucher from Harrah’s Cherokee Casino Resort. Did someone lose it or is it part of a brilliant marketing scheme?

Frank says that an insurance company is gambling on him to stay alive for over twenty years. He had to buy life insurance himself for the first time because he had life insurance through his employers over the years. He is an independent contractor for his current jobs.

He had to fill out a questionnaire about his lifestyle and activities that might be risky. The insurance company sent someone to his house for a brief physical that included a blood test and urine test. The woman from the exam company noticed Frank’s radio microphone while he was in the bathroom.

Krisha has been working full time at a theater in Pigeon Forge. Frank congratulates her on accomplishing the dream of those who have a “day job” and wish to work in the entertainment business full-time.

In addition to acting and stage-managing, Krisha has been learning how to clog dance and how to play the mandolin. Next she will learn to be a stunt diver in the show.

Krisha’s journey of self-discovery reminds Frank of a terrible song called “I’ve Never Been to Me.” Frank’s wife has filled in on some See More Smokies episodes. Frank chose locations that would be too far away for Krisha to attend.

Krisha hasn’t seen any cicadas in Sevier County. Frank thinks his property is the border for the cicadas in his neighborhood. He has cicadas in his yard but there are none across the street.

Frank’s daughter has to sweep the cicadas off her porch to avoid stepping on them. Frank Jr. explained that the 17-year cicadas and the 13-year cicadas are successful because their life cycles are relatively large prime numbers.

Frank saw a David Attenborough video about the mating call of the 17-year cicadas. Attenborough snapped his fingers to imitate the sound of the female cicada and made a male cicada follow the snapping sound.

After today’s show, Frank is headed downtown to host the video stream for Marble City Opera’s production of Tosca. He is very proud of Jere, who is in the opera chorus. In-person tickets are sold out but the online stream can be purchased at https://MarbleCityOpera.com/tickets

Today’s episode is sponsored by Steve’s Tree Service. They have excellent ratings on Facebook, Google, Yelp, and neighborhood apps. Steve’s Tree Service serves Knox, Sevier, Blount, Anderson, Loudon, and Jefferson Counties. Call 865-257-6214.
